How to pick an Instagram username
Your username is your @, your profile link and what people type to tag you. Short and clear wins, because every extra character is a chance to mistype it.
Keep it short
Instagram allows 30 characters, but handles under about 15 are much easier to remember and tag.
Use a period or underscore sparingly
One separator can make two words readable, like anna.ceramics. More than one starts to look messy.
Match your name field
Your name field can say more, like "Anna | Ceramics". Together they tell visitors who you are.
Stay consistent
If you post on other platforms, try to claim the same username there too.
Aesthetic Instagram usernames
Pick the Aesthetic style for soft, lowercase usernames built from gentle words, often with a period between them. Add a keyword like your niche or a favourite color to make the ideas more personal.
Username rules by platform
Instagram usernames can be up to 30 characters and can only use letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Instagram's sign-up form also rejects usernames that end with a period, have two periods in a row or contain no letters.
The generator plays it safer than the rules: every idea is lowercase, starts and ends with a letter or number, never puts two symbols in a row and contains at least one letter. YouTube handles skip periods so they can't look like a web address.
| Platform | Length | Allowed characters | Other rules | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2 to 24 | Letters, numbers, underscores, periods | Can't end with a period | TikTok Help Center |
| Up to 30 | Letters, numbers, underscores, periods | Can't end with a period or have two periods in a row; needs a letter | Instagram sign-up form | |
| YouTube handle | 3 to 30 | Letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods | No symbol at the start or end; can't look like a URL or phone number | YouTube Help |
How to change your Instagram username
Go to your profile, tap Edit profile and change your username, or change it in Accounts Center. If your account reaches a lot of people, Instagram may review the change before it goes live, and your followers may be notified.
Check availability before you fall in love
This generator doesn't check whether a name is taken. Before you print it on anything, search for it on the platform, then type it into the username field when you edit your profile: the app tells you right away if it's free.
Want the same handle everywhere? Check it on every platform you use before you claim the first one.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters. Every idea from this generator stays within that limit.
Which characters can an Instagram username use?
Letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Instagram's sign-up form rejects usernames that end with a period, have two periods in a row or contain no letters.
How do I get an aesthetic Instagram username?
Pick the Aesthetic style and enter your name or a few words you like. Add keywords such as a color, a season or your niche to steer the ideas.
Does the generator check if a username is available?
No. It only makes sure each idea follows the platform's username rules. Search for a name on the platform, or try it in the username field of your profile, before you commit to it.
Why do I sometimes get fewer than 20 ideas?
Ideas that break the platform's rules, like a handle that's too long or uses a character the platform doesn't allow, are removed before you see them.
Is this generator free?
Yes. You don't need an account or a credit card. To keep it fast for everyone, each visitor can generate 5 times per minute and 30 times per day across FeedHive's free AI tools.
Do you store what I type?
No. FeedHive doesn't save what you type or the ideas. Your input is sent to an AI model only to write the ideas, and they are gone when you leave the page.
